Thanks to its brilliant combination of suspense, horror, and comedy, The Grudge 2 became the best-selling American horror film in Japan in 2006. Now director Takashi Shimizu returns with a new sequel that's even more chilling and terrifying than the first two films. In 2005 an American photographer named Kiriya (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is sent to Tokyo by her employer to take pictures of a model home called the House of Horrors. Kiriya discovers that people who enter this house never come back out alive. Determined to leave no one behind in danger, Kiriya goes in to rescue the house's captive family. In the process she is attacked by a mysterious ghost that she believes to be the source of all evil. In Tokyo, Mio Kusakari (Ai Maeda), a student at an elite private school, becomes friends with another transfer student from America named Jennifer Williams (Maria Bello). Mio also puts up with her snobby classmates and gets harassed by her strict teachers. Mio and Jennifer get into a car accident and Mio is severely injured. She soon discovers that she can see ghosts, so she uses this ability to investigate the House of Horrors. Meanwhile, Jennifer has to do all kinds of tasks around the house such as housekeeping and cooking for her boss's family. She also has to manage her strict coworkers. Mio meets a man named Tanaka (Harley John Delancy), an American ex-soldier who is investigating the House of Horrors with his wife Aiko (Mei Hashimoto), and his son Yuki (Tadanobu Asano). Mio and Tanaka meet up to discuss their experiences when they discover the House of Horrors. Mio, Jennifer, Tanaka, and his family investigate the house when Mio suspects that a ghost in this house kills people. Jennifer begins to think that it might be a demonic spirit that feeds on fear. It is revealed that a curse in this house causes all women in the family to die at the age of 21. The curse also causes all men in this family to kill their wives on their 21st birthday so they can preserve their beauty forever. The film was released to DVD by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on January 15, 2009, along with "" and "". Sony's Blu-ray of the film was released on July 13, 2010. Rob Nelson of "Variety" said that it was "as if "Ghostbusters" had been remade with J-horror trappings, albeit without the charm or wit." He added that it seemed to have been made for fans of the previous film rather than general audiences. Michael Rechtshaffen of the "Los Angeles Times" called it a "barely serviceable, borderline absurd sequel" that is mostly carried by Gellar. Stuart Galbraith IV wrote in the DVD Talk review that he enjoyed what he described as Shimizu's subtlety in making horror scenes scary, although overall he considered the story ridiculous. cfa1e77820
